2. FMM calls for details on multi-tier levy implementation

3. Gig workers want balanced Bill before it’s tabled again

Gig worker associations in Malaysia urge a balanced Gig Workers’ Economy Bill that protects workers without hindering industry sustainability. Malaysian eHailing Association chief activist Jose Rizal warns that over-regulation could stifle innovation and reduce job opportunities. 4. Miti extends deferral of 80:20 employment ratio rule for manufacturing sector

The Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry (Miti) extended the deferral of the 80:20 employment ratio for the manufacturing sector until the multi-level levy mechanism (MTLM) is fully implemented in early 2025. MTLM aims to reduce dependence on foreign workers, encourage automation, and boost productivity, aligning with NIMP 2030 and CIVIL Malaysia aspirations. Levies will support technological advancements.

5. PERKESO-Mavcom sign MOU for aviation workers’ welfare

PERKESO and the Malaysian Aviation Commission (Mavcom) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to enhance the welfare of aviation workers and ensure employer compliance with the Employees’ Social Security Act. During the COVID-19 pandemic, PERKESO disbursed nearly RM21 billion, aiding 2.96 million workers and preventing 357,000 businesses from collapsing. Additionally, over RM13 million was allocated through the Wage Subsidy Programme to support more than 800 aviation workers facing job losses.

6. Telco workers caught stealing cables in Penang

Eight Telekom Malaysia (TM) employees, including two staff and six subcontractors aged between 31 and 42, were arrested in Tanjung Bungah, Penang, for stealing 242 rods of telecommunication cables worth approximately RM100,000. The cables, each about 4 meters long and 5 cm in diameter, were seized from their trucks during a police patrol at 6 am on 17 December 2024.

7. Manager remanded over 'title for sale' probe

A 54-year-old manager from a private firm in Selangor was arrested by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) for allegedly soliciting and accepting RM375,000 in bribes from a businessman, promising a "Datuk Seri" title. The businessman paid but did not receive the title. The suspect is remanded for three days under Section 16(a)(A) of the MACC Act 2009.
