1. Thumbs up to S’wak Labour Ordinance amendments
The Malaysian Employers Federation (MEF) has praised the recent amendments to the Sarawak Labour Ordinance (SLO), tabled in the Dewan Rakyat, for aligning employee protections in Sarawak with national standards. Key changes include increasing maternity leave from 60 to 98 days, introducing seven days of paternity leave, extending overtime benefits to those earning up to RM4,000 monthly, and implementing non-discriminatory workplace clauses.

2. Implement new minimum wage in stages – SME Sabah
The Small Medium Enterprise Association of Sabah (SME Sabah) has expressed concerns over the proposed increase in the minimum wage to RM1,700, effective February 1, 2025. They advocate for a phased implementation, citing potential financial strain on small businesses and the risk of increased unemployment due to higher operational costs.
