1.      Chief statistician warns employers against misusing new cost-of-living data to justify low wages

Chief Statistician Datuk Seri Mohd Uzir Mahidin cautioned employers against misusing the new Basic Expenditure for Decent Living (PAKW) indicator to justify low wages, emphasizing its role in promoting fair compensation and improving living standards. The PAKW, unveiled on November 2, calculates living costs by geography and household factors to guide policymakers, empower households, and set fair salary benchmarks.

2.     DOSM: Labour demand in 3Q2024 hits 9.01 million jobs, highest since 2018

Malaysia's Third Quarter 2024 Labour Force Statistics reported 9.01 million job openings, the highest since 2018, with a 1.2% year-on-year increase. Filled positions rose to 8.82 million, driven by growth in services (+1.6%), manufacturing (+1%), and agriculture (+1.8%). The unemployment rate fell to 3.2%, reflecting economic stability and rising labour demand across sectors.

3.     Malaysia says it got Bangladesh request to arrest businessmen

Malaysia’s Home Affairs Minister Saifuddin Nasution confirmed receiving a request from Bangladesh to arrest two businessmen, Aminul Islam of Bestinet Sdn. Bhd. and Ruhul Amin, for alleged trafficking, money laundering, and extortion. Both businessmen deny the allegations, with Aminul pledging cooperation to provide all information through written or virtual channels.

4.     Another firm director remanded over fake foreign-workers-quota documents — Selangor MACC

The Selangor MACC has remanded a company director suspected of submitting falsified documents to secure a RM1.1 million foreign worker quota approval. The suspect, a woman in her 40s, allegedly conspired to submit applications for 600 foreign workers without an actual labour supply. The case is being investigated under Section 18 of the MACC Act 2009.
